Christmas EvePrince Albert’s Christmas Supper

Queen Victoria loved Christmas; a 'most dear happy time'. After her marriage to Prince Albert, she took great care to encourage German Christmas customs to make her husband feel at home. These included decorated trees, a lavish celebratory meal, Christmas Cards and gifts to the poor.
Over the years of her long reign such traditions were taken up by people throughout the Empire.
In their honour, The Green Man presents a German Christmas Eve Menu (see Panel opposite ).
Most Continental Europeans have their main Christmas Meal on 24th December, so this is also an opportunity for this custom to be accommodated at The Green Man.

Christmas As It Was, Whenever You Want Any day between Saturday, 13th December 2008 and Monday, 5th January 2009
Christmas Chez Digby-Johns was always maximalist, OTT, wondrous, bloated, luxurious, but above all Special, a capital affair, lacking in none of the Christmas Spirits.
In unhappier days in England the wild license of Christmas celebrations, came under the disfavour of the Puritans. In Scotland, John Knox put an end to Christmas in 1562. In Parliament in 1644, Oliver Cromwell declared Christmas was "an extreme forgetfulness of Christ. by giving liverty to carnall and sensual delights." So the House of Commons sat on Christmas day and sheriffs were sent out to require merchants to open for business.
The Puritans had brought to America a Cromwellian detestation of Christmas, and the festive aspects of Christmas, including the tree, were not accepted in New England or Pennsylvania until about 1875. The celebration of Christmas was a crime in Massachusetts in 1659.
So for those of you unfortunate enough not to be available on Christmas Day, you are not alone. But happily, in Thailand we can arrange your own private Christmas, with all the trappings at a date convenient to you, and inconvenient to your particular Ollie. Just call us. |
